Something to Celebrate! Cristo Rey: Outstanding 98% Graduation Rate

Written By Melody McSparran

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]-uCN9L6aChrist Community Church began a partnership with Cristo Rey High School in Kansas City a number of years ago and it has been an inspirational connection. We are involved in a school that successfully provides a college preparatory education to urban students who otherwise have limited options for quality education. Cristo Rey is a hope-filled place with an astonishing graduation rate of 98 percent, topped only by a college acceptance rate of 100 percent for those graduates. A vital component of Cristo Rey’s educational model is the work-study program. Students participate one day each week in the workforce, earning a significant portion of their tuition and gaining much needed professional skills and experience. All of this is provided in an environment which emphasizes a Christian worldview.

Since the beginning of this partnership, members of the Christ Community family have found numerous ways to engage with Cristo Rey, including: mentoring and tutoring students, helping in the office and with fundraising, and providing tech support and employment opportunities.

Additionally, every summer, our church celebrates Cristo Rey’s college-bound students. Working alongside local corporations, backpacks are filled with school supplies, hygiene items, and linens as an expression of our support for these graduates entering the next stage of their lives. They have worked very hard to achieve this milestone! Please consider how you might give and cheer them on.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vcex_button url=”http://christcommunitykc.org/event-details/?ccbpress_event_id=7672″ icon_left=”fa fa-arrow-circle-right”]Backpack Drive[/vcex_button][/vc_column][/vc_row]

The call came on a rainy, chilly afternoon when I was preparing for oral surgery the following day. A woman who had mothered me as a young adult and continued to love me generously and steadfastly collapsed suddenly and was on life support.

Bread for Jews, Bread for Gentiles

In Matthew chapter 15, Jesus performs a miracle. He feeds 4000 people from seven loaves of bread and “a few small fish” (Matthew 15:34).

And yet, somehow, if you’ve been reading through Matthew, the miracle seems almost unimpressive. After all, just one chapter earlier, Jesus fed a crowd of 5000 people from five loaves of bread and two fish! (Matthew 14:13-21). As a reader, I’m thinking, Jesus, I’ve seen this miracle already, and it was better last time.
